Frequently Asked Questions

What is the road like to Matapalo and do I need 4 wheel drive?
The road is in perfect paved condition and the last 600 meters to Jungle House was finally paved! The Pacific Coast Highway was finished several years ago and is a joy to travel!

Is there a grocery store in the village of Matapalo?
Yes, there are 3. The first one is on the beach and is most convenient for Jungle House guests. Keinor and his wife Kenia are eager to help you find whatever you need.  A second located in the Matapalo village offers a wide range “continental selection”. Fernando and his family will make every effort to find you what you need. The third is the Super Matapalo in the village.

Our suggestion is (if traveling by car) to stop at the Maxi Pali conveniently located along the main highway just before Quepos to get most of your provisions. In particular it is the perfect place to pick up fruits and vegetables which are more difficult to find in Matapalo.

Once you arrive to Jungle House, if you feel you missed something, chances are good that you will find it in one of the three local stores.

How is the water in front of Jungle House, are there any undertows, or is it dangerous?
The ocean is very safe in front of Jungle House for two reasons. First, the beach out front is comprised of a very gentle slope which goes way out to sea. One would have to go along way out, to get to a level of depth, which could be dangerous, and it is only dangerous if you ignore the natural signs talking to you. Obviously if you feel at your ankles and shins the pull of the water which is very distinguishable as an undertow, you simply don’t go out deeper than your waist.

The second reason Matapalo’s beaches are safe is due to our lifeguard program in effect out front. You will see our tower out in front of Jungle House. It is manned by qualified and trained Matapalo youth who are all surfers and well acquainted with the ocean and her moods. They have been certified after intense study and physical demands by the National Association of Lifeguards, the equivalent of the Red Cross.

What about the sun and it’s effects in Matapalo?
Matapalo is located much closer to the equator than your home, as such the sun rays are much more intense and require skin protection. Please be mindful of this when going into the sun. We have had one too many guest ruin their trip from sunburn at the beginning for lack of precaution. Once your lotions are applied with sun block, feel free to wander all you like.

Is there anything we can bring to Matapalo to donate to the local community?
Absolutely. Please send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and they will give you an idea of what’s most needed. Matapalo is a very poor village and simple things like a used pair of shoes, a soccer ball, or second hand clothing can be a very useful and great gift for someone.

What are the seasons like in Matapalo?
There are only 2 seasons in Costa Rica, the summer from Dec through April when there is literally little or no rainfall and the “Green Season” when the rains begin in May and continue on through November. Don’t misunderstand the message though, between May and September there is always either rain in the morning and sun all afternoon or vice versa. It’s actually everybody’s favorite time to be at the beach.

Is the water in Matapalo ok to drink?
Yes, or else we would be making tons of money off of you from selling bottled water. One of the principle prerequisites in order to be awarded the “Bandera Azul” or Blue Flag, is that the quality of the drinking water, as well as the ocean water, must be tested annually. Most recent results showed a 99% purity rating.
